Call for applicants for the 2018 season:
JULY 29 - AUGUST 18
$1500 for 3 weeks - final few spots available
We are currently seeking applicants for the first season of excavation at Castelo, located in the Alentejo region of Portugal. Feel free to contact us for additional information!
Castelo sits atop the easternmost hill in a chain of three consecutive Bronze Age hilltop settlements (Evoramonte, São Gens, and Castelo) on the Serra d’Ossa. As excavations at Evoramonte indicate a clear stratigraphic sequence with eight discernable radiocarbon dates from the fifteenth to the eighth century BCE, the site of Castelo has exciting prospects as it is a large site – approximately fifteen hectares – lacks a nearby water source, and is surrounded by a wall; perhaps defensive in nature. The 2018 season will be the site’s first comprehensive excavation. We hope to gather material, architectural, and geographic data in order to grasp a better understanding of social structure during this period.
Prior experience in archaeology is not required - students of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. This field school will train students in archaeological methods, such as excavation techniques, recording, illustration, and the handling and processing of artifacts.
Tuition for the 3 week session (including room, board, and transportation within Portugal) is $1500 USD. The application deadline is June 1, 2018. Students are encouraged to apply early as admission is on a rolling basis.
