Flying to Portugal

• PLEASE NOTE: We require a minimum of 6 students for the project to run. All participants will be notified as soon as this minimum number has been reached and the project is confirmed. We strongly advise students not to purchase travel tickets until they have received confirmation that the project will proceed.
• We ask that you meet us at the Lisbon airport on Sunday, November 29, 2026. If you are travelling from an international destination like the US, Canada, or Australia, you will likely be on an overnight flight, so you will need to fly from your departure city at least one day prior.
• We ask that you try to book a flight that arrives no later than 1:30PM/13:30H. Students that arrive much later than this will have to take a bus to Redondo.
• Feel free to fly to Portugal and explore Lisbon before the project starts. Just make sure to meet us at the airport on the aforementioned date. ​

Leaving Portugal

• At the end of the session, you will be dropped off at the Lisbon airport, so feel free to book your return ticket for this date. The end of the  session is Saturday, December 19.​
• Please make sure your return flight does not depart too early in the morning (i.e. before 9:30 am) - it may be difficult to get you to the airport on time as we are a few hours away from Lisbon. Students with very early flights will be required to bus to Lisbon the day prior and book a hostel/hotel.​​​

What to Pack
​​A single medium-sized suitcase and a carry-on should be sufficient and will make it easier for you to get around. You will have access to a washing machine at your accommodation, but not a dryer. Please use the following list as a general guide:

Everyday Items​

• Clothes
  • ​While it does not get too cold in the Alentejo during the winter (temperatures rarely fall below 0°C), houses are often poorly insulated and typically lack central heating. In turn, indoor temperatues can feel surprisingly cold (to the extent that it is sometimes colder inside than it is outside). We recommend bringing plenty of layers, including long-sleeved shirts, warm sweaters, a good winter coat, and a waterproof jacket or raincoat.
• ​Comfortable and warm shoes/boots
• Comfortable and warm slippers for use inside the house
• Towel
• Essential toiletries (though there are lots of options at the local grocery store, so don't overpack)
• Any necessary prescriptions/over-the-counter medications/vitamins that will last the length of your stay
• Cellphone/tablet/laptop
• U.S. to Southern Europe electrical adapter (pack a few!) and chargers for your electronics
• Spending money
  • You can use the ATM at the airport or in Redondo to take out Euros but it's always good to be prepared.
• Internationally valid bank/credit card
• Passport (apply early if you do not already have one)
• International calling/data plan OR esim ​OR purchase a Portuguese SIM at the Lisbon airport - this is highly recommended, as our project group chat will require cellular data.
