3 Week Session: August 6 - August 26
4 Week Session: August 6 - September 2

THE APPLICATION

The application entails the following: 

  • Your name, e-mail address, nationality, date of birth, and current academic affiliation (if applicable)
  • A few short questions asking you to describe your interest in the program
  • Indication of all dietary needs, allergies, and/or relevant health issues​
  • A copy of your CV or resume (in .doc or .pdf format)

Those interested are encouraged to apply early as admission is on a rolling basis. The application deadline is May 1, 2023.

SCHOLARSHIPS

We encourage all students to apply to external scholarships, such as the following: 
  • Jane C. Waldbaum Archaeological Field School Scholarship (AIA) | Application deadline: March 1, 2023
  • Frank M. Snowden Jr. Undergraduate Scholarships (SCS) | Application deadline: December 20, 2022​

APPLYING TO THE FIELD SCHOOL

Tuition for the 3 week session (including room, board, and transportation within Portugal) is $1500 USD.
Tuition for the 4 week session (including room, board, and transportation within Portugal) is $1850 USD. 

Students are responsible for their own travel/medical insurance and plane tickets to and from Lisbon. The application deadline will be announced. Students are encouraged to apply early as admission is on a rolling basis.

We are seeking applicants for the third season of excavation at the Bronze Age/Iron Age site of Castelo, located in the Alentejo region of Portugal. We are looking for a fairly small team, so apply early! Feel free to contact us for additional information.

Prior experience in archaeology is not required - students of all backgrounds (and any others interested) are encouraged to apply. This field school will train students in archaeological methods, such as excavation techniques, recording, illustration, and the handling and processing of artifacts. Visit our Field School page for additional information on the program and life on the project.

​Course credit is not offered for this field school. However, we are happy to sign off on forms if you are planning on applying to scholarships.

Please note the following:
Once accepted, students will be asked to fill out a number of forms and pay the full tuition. The funding for this project comes from student tuition. All payments made to the Castelo Archaeological Project go directly toward room and board for the crew, field trips, site and artifact conservation, and funding for specialist analyses. This project is run with consent from the 
Direção-Geral do Património Cultural (DGPC) and the Municipality of Redondo. This project is not affiliated with the universities' of the listed staff and attending students.
