LOGISTICS

Flying to Portugal
  • Look for flights to Lisbon, Portugal sooner rather than later.
  • We ask that you meet us at the Lisbon airport on Sunday, August 6 - that means if you are travelling from an international destination like the US or Canada, you will likely be on an overnight flight, so you will need to fly from your departure city the day before.
  • Feel free to fly to Portugal and explore Lisbon before the project starts . Just make sure to meet us at the airport on August 6.
  • You are responsible for reviewing any travel restrictions from your 1) country of origin, 2) any stop-overs you might have on your way to Portugal, and in 3) Portugal.

Leaving Portugal
  • At the end of each session (either August 26 or September 2), you will be dropped off at the Lisbon airport, so feel free to book your return ticket for this date.
  • If possible, please make sure your return flight does not depart too early in the morning - it may be difficult to get you to the airport on time as we are a few hours away from Lisbon - but we will try our very best, even if that means leaving very early in the morning from Redondo!
  • For peace of mind, there are other solutions. You could take the bus from Redondo to Lisbon the day before (it's very easy and cheap), stay a night in Lisbon (we can recommend hostels), and have ample time to make it to the airport the next morning. It's up to you.
  • If you can, stay a while longer in Portugal to explore Lisbon, Porto, and all its other incredibly beautiful destinations. We are more than happy to give you advice about places to stay and eat while in Lisbon and Porto. If you choose to do some travelling prior to the excavation, we ask that you still meet us at the airport on the start date.

What to Pack

Whether you're participating on a 2 week excavation or a 6 week excavation, you should pack the same amount. A single medium-sized suitcase and carry-ons should be sufficient (pack even lighter if you can) and will make it easier for you to get around. Please use the following list as a guiding point and remove or add whatever you deem necessary:
Non-Dig Items
  • Clothes (for when you're not in the field)
  • Swimsuit
  • Towel
  • Toiletries (lots of options at the local grocery store)
  • Any necessary prescriptions/over-the-counter medications/vitamins
  • PPE - masks, wipes, sanitizer, etc.
  • Laptop/tablet
  • Cellphone
  • Camera
  • U.S. to Southern Europe electrical adapter (important! pack a few!)
  • Chargers for your electronics
  • Spending money (you can use the ATM at the airport or in Redondo to take out some euros but it's always good to be prepared)
  • Comfortable shoes/sandals
  • Internationally valid bank/credit card
  • PASSPORT (apply early if you do not already have one and make sure your passport is far from its expiration date)
  • International calling/data plan (or you can purchase a Portuguese SIM card at the Lisbon airport if your phone is unlocked)
Dig Items (these will get very dirty)
  • Shirts (short and long-sleeved for sun protection)
  • Pants/shorts/leggings (whatever you're comfortable working in)
  • Sturdy and comfortable closed-toe hiking or work boots/shoes (make sure to break them in prior to coming to Portugal)
  • Bandana/dust mask (to protect yourself against the dust)
  • Hat: very important - it's sunny and hot, even with a tarp
  • Work gloves
  • Water bottles (1.5 litre bottles can be purchased in Redondo for very cheap)
  • Powdered Gatorade or something similar (not necessary but helpful to get electrolytes in)
  • Small backpack/bag (to carry your water, snack, sunscreen, etc. to site everyday)
  • Knee-pads (some dig with them, some without - it's up to you)
  • Sweater (it can occasionally get a little chilly in the mornings)
  • Sunscreen (spray-on is easiest)
