2021 STATEMENT RE: COVID-19 - PROGRAM CANCELLED
We have made the decision to cancel our 2021 season. Unfortunately, it appears that the vaccine will not be widely available in Portugal or Canada (where our staff are based) prior to the start of the summer. We are so disappointed but look forward to planning our 2022 season.
2021 STATEMENT RE: COVID-19
We are tentatively planning our 2021 season. However, please note that the running of our 2021 season is contingent upon the availability of a COVID-19 vaccine. If widely available months prior to the start of our 2021 season, staff and students will be required to show proof of vaccination - no exceptions. The vaccine must also be made widely available to our host town of Redondo, so as not to risk the spread of infection to locals.
All participants on the excavation are required to provide their own health and/or travel insurance. Students are responsible for their own travel/medical insurance (which must cover COVID-19 treatment in Portugal) and plane tickets to and from Lisbon. You are required to send us proof of this insurance.
Tuition payment will not be requested until we are certain that the program will run. We also strongly advise that students not purchase any airfare prior to our confirmation that we will proceed with our 2021 season.
You are responsible for reviewing any travel restrictions from:
Please review any travel and quarantine requirements from your country of origin and any stop-overs you might have on your way home. Certain countries may require evidence of a negative COVID-19 test (your responsibility), others may require a mandatory at-home or hotel 2-week quarantine period upon arrival - you must account for any required quarantine periods.
Feel free to contact us with any questions at: [email protected].

2020 Statement RE: COVID-19 - PROGRAM CANCELLED
In March 2020, we wrote conveying hopefulness and our feeling that it was premature to cancel excavations for this summer in the wake of emerging information about COVID-19. Over the past few weeks, we have been monitoring the global situation closely. Unfortunately, things are looking decidedly bleak in North America and Europe. As the US is now the epicentre of the pandemic, and most of us would be coming from North America, we are extremely concerned about the potential spread of infection. Redondo, the town where our project is based, has a sizable elderly population which has heightened our awareness of the potential threat we might pose this summer.
Thus, the Castelo Archaeological Research Project has made the decision to cancel our 2020 summer field season. We realize that this may be disappointing – but in light of the pandemic and uncertainty for the months ahead, it is a decision we had to make. The staff will continue working remotely on things behind the scenes, such as publications and planning for future seasons.
Given the circumstances, we would like to offer you the opportunity to hold a spot on our team for any future seasons. We are considering running a winter field school at Castelo (perhaps in December 2020), so keep an eye out on our website for that. Please do not hesitate to write with questions, and feel free to reach out as you plan for the summer of 2021. We are hopeful that we will get to work with some or all of you next year, and are already looking forward to our next season – the beautiful Alentejo awaits you!
